Northwestern Lehigh H.S. Wrestling

Hall of Fame

Elton Minnich (1964-Current)

Northwestern Lehigh High School

Hall of Fame Inductee

*Elton was inducted on Wednesday January 23, 2008*

Elton graduated from Northwestern Union H.S. in 1964.  Elton is known as “The Chicken Man” by his friends.  He raised and shows poultry at fairs and traveling events.  He is married to Jeannie and they have one son, Joshua.

Elton has provided the NWL Wrestling Program with countless years of service!

The wrestling program at Northwestern Lehigh High School started in 1965.  Elton started coaching in the midget program at Northwestern Lehigh in 1980 as an assistant to Jim Schmoyer.  From 1983 to 1985, he was the head coach.

Did Elton ever wrestle?  One time he wrestled at the Old Timers Wrestling Tournament at the YMCA (Allentown) in 1985.  Although he had fun, Elton lost both matches.

Elton stayed in the program as an assistant t coach until 1995.  Elton started to help with the Wrestling Booster Club in 2001.  He is still at it today.  Besides from his volunteer services to the wrestling program, Elton continues to be responsible for the High School Tiger Wrestling Programs.

Some of Eltons Best Memories include:

1.      Elton’s best experience is being able to see his name in the Youth Wrestling Program where it lists Elton as a past wrestling coach.  This brings him honor.  He follows the youth wrestlers through the varsity program and he feels a great deal of respect when the boys grow up to become young men.  Seeing how they improve in life and how they will still call him Sir or Mr. Minnich when they see him.

2.      In 1971, Don Rohn (Saucon Valley) and Mark Fenstermaker (Northwestern Lehigh were both undefeated they were both 14-0.  Don Rohn won the match with a score of 5-0.  They did not meet in districts that year.  Don Rohn went on to become a two-time state champion.  Elton enjoyed watching Don Rohn and would continue to follow his career.

3.      Another “Best Memory from Elton” just took place last wrestling season.  The Tigers shutout Notre Dame at Notre Dame.  Score 67-0.  (ND had a very good team!)  Elton remembers watching the highly anticipated match-up of Evan Yenolevich vs. Matt Rodriquez.  Rodriquez was a senior with a 24-0 record.  (Evan won the match by fall in the second period.

4.      Overall, Elton really enjoys the sport of wrestling and has enjoyed many of the successes that wrestling has brought to Northwestern Lehigh over the years!

Congratulations to Elton Minnich for being chosen as the 2008 Northwestern Lehigh Wrestling Hall of Fame Inductee.
