1983-1984
1983-84 "The Cat is
Back" is the way the Allentown Morning Call described the Tigers.
Coached again by Mr. Pladus and Mr. Talotta, Northwestern won the
Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament and went undefeated in league
competition, ending the year as Centennial League champions.
The placed first in the Centennial League Tournament, third in
the district XI Tournament, and second in the PIAA Eastern Regional
Tournament. Leading the
15-1 Tigers, whose only loss was to powerful Nazareth, were seniors Tim
Kelchner and Jason Grantham, who capped outstanding careers with notable
accomplishments. Kelchner
won his second League championship, was second in District XI and second
in Regionals and went all the way to the State semi-final before having
to settle for a sixth place medal at Hershey.
Jason Grantham made it to the League finals for the third time by
winning has first championship, was runner-up in both the District XI
and Regional championships and qualified for the State Tournament, for
the second time. Juniors
Keith Nielsen and Tim Erkinger also accompanied Jason and Kelshner to
the state tournament as both wrestlers placed in the top at both
Districts and Regional’s. Erkinger,
on the way to Hershey, won his third consecutive championship at Leagues
and also took first place in the District XI Tournament.
Another junior, Jim Yost, posted a record of 26-6, won a league
championship, placed third at districts and was the victim of a heart
breaking loss at Regional’s, where he had to settle for fourth place,
keeping him from making a return trip to Hershey.
